Two important changes to the developer side of the App Store that Apple announced a week ago are finally taking effect today.
First of all, abandoned apps that no longer meet the App Store guidelines will be pruned to “make it easier for customers to find great apps that fit their needs”. As the store is expected to reach 5 million apps by 2020 this measure seems nothing but the only step to maintain a quality user experience.
What is more important to the majority of publishers — reduced app name (from 255 to 50 characters) and a restriction to “include terms or descriptions that are not the name of the app”. The change affects the most common practice in App Store Optimization — placing choice keywords in the title to improve searching ranking. According to Sensor Tower’s article
, at least 27% of free apps, 21% of the top paid and 23% of top grossing sections will have to shorten their names to meet new naming length requirements.
